Physical Education -- Mrs. Susan Backus
|
At the primary level, the emphasis in physical education class is on locomotor movements, sportsmanship, rhythm and skill building. At the middle school and junior high levels, the emphasis is on improving skills, cooperative learning through problem solving and dance. Team sports are also taught at this level -- we teach that knowing and following rules, developing proper skills and full participation are more important than winning or losing.

Good health is the most important gift you can give to yourself. How can you have good health if you dont know how to get it? My job is to have my students know the answer to that question and keep that answer with them until they leave my class. Physical Education is an integral part of the total education of a child. Children need good Physical Education programs to increase their physical competence, health-related fitness, self-esteem and enjoyment of physical activity so they can be physically active for a lifetime. My Physical Education class gives children the opportunity to set and strive for personal and achievable goals. They develop motor skills and sport skills that they can use throughout their life. Through learning these skills, children become more confident and self-controlled. Children will learn to socialize with others more successfully especially in the teen years where participation in dances, games and sports is important. Physical education helps develop the students responsibility to exercise regularly and eat the right foods so they can feel better about themselves. I believe that when a student leaves my class they have learned something that will keep them healthy for a lifetime.
